Opossum showing defensive behavior — safely removed by Native Wildlife Solutions Pasco County

Actual Job Photo · Opossum Removal · Pasco County, FL

Opossums are North America's only native marsupial — and one of Florida's most common nuisance wildlife problems. They're opportunistic scavengers that thrive in suburban environments: under decks, in crawl spaces, inside attics, and anywhere there's a reliable food source.

While opossums are generally non-aggressive (their famous “playing dead” response is a defense mechanism, not a choice), their presence brings real problems: they contaminate areas with feces and urine, damage insulation, attract fleas and ticks, and aggressively raid pet food, garbage, and gardens.

Signs You Have an Opossum Problem

  • Hissing, clicking, or scratching sounds at night under the house or deck
  • Knocked-over trash cans with large-scale scattering
  • Strong musky odor near crawl spaces, decks, or sheds
  • Pet food disappearing overnight
  • Sightings at night — opossums are nocturnal

Our Methodology

Our Opossum Trapping Method

Opossums are relatively straightforward to trap compared to coyotes or armadillos — they follow food more readily. We use large cage traps baited with fish, fruit, or cat food placed near entry points, active travel routes, or known feeding areas.

Traps are checked every 24 hours. Captured opossums are relocated to appropriate habitat well away from your property. After removal, we identify and seal entry points to prevent re-entry.

Preventing Opossum Problems

  • Secure all garbage cans with locking or bungee-secured lids
  • Remove fallen fruit from yard and garden areas promptly
  • Bring pet food indoors at night — do not leave food bowls outside
  • Seal openings under decks, porches, and crawl spaces with hardware cloth
  • Trim low-hanging branches and dense shrubs near the house that provide cover
  • Install motion-activated lights near trash areas and entry points
